Tbilisi: The Ministry of Justice of Georgia shared the experience of the fighting against women and domestic violence with the delegation of the Republic of Moldova.

The Ministry of Justice hosted the delegation of the Republic of Moldova on a study visit.During a study visit, members of the delegation of the Republic of Moldova from Georgian colleagues under the leadership of the Ministry of Justice “Prevention and Detention of Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence” of the Council of Europe on 11 May 2011 ratification and further implementation of the Council of European Convention (Istanbul Convention).

The Changes in Georgian legislation, awareness-raising measures against women and domestic violence, behavioral correction programs in the penitentiary and probation systems  are the major issues that the Moldovan delegation learned about during the study visit.

Notably, the educational visit of the Moldovan Delegation was planned within the framework of the Council of Europe project. The Council of Europe considers that for the Republic of Moldova, which ratified the Istanbul Convention in 2022, Georgian mechanism of monitoring femicide and Georgian model of implementation of the Convention at the level of national legislation is exemplary.

Georgia has completed ratification of the Istanbul Convention in 2017, after which, with the joint efforts of the executive, legislative, judicial authorities and non-governmental sectors and the Ministry of Justice, effective legal and institutional instruments for eliminating and responding to violence against women were created.

Sharing Georgia’s experience will help the Republic of Moldova in preventing violence against women and domestic violence, effectively fighting against this crime and identifying the victims of violence. The educational visit serves to deepen the cooperation between the two countries.
