The Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili, has assured his support for the people of Ukraine and further called for a diplomatic solution for the situation, following Russia’s recognition of the independence of Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk regions on February 23.
PM Garibashvili emphasised the need for diplomacy talks and negotiations in conflict resolution by saying, “People of Georgia knows the price of war very well.”
He added, “I would like to assure our support for our fellow nation and express solidarity with Ukraine. Obviously, what had happened is unacceptable. Russia’s recognition of the Ukrainian territories as independent states is absolutely unacceptable as it infringes the principles of international law.”
Moreover, according to PM Garibashvili, Georgia is not in danger as of today, adding the Georgian administration is keeping track of current developments throughout the country and region.
The Georgian Prime Minister emphasised the significance of a “realistic assessment” of the situation in Ukraine, saying his government will utilise “all available resources” to help deescalate the conflict.
Furthermore, he noted, “The whole international system is facing a big challenge. We are doing and will do the maximum of what our country is capable of.”
Moreover, the president of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, also showed her support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and peace by addressing words of encouragement to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
In a tweet, Zourabichvili mentioned that Russia’s action “repeats the situation” that resulted in the occupation of 20% of Georgia’s territory since 2008.
Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin’s decision to recognise the independence of Ukrainian regions on February 21 came after a request from Russia’s Security Council, and the Russian State Duma unanimously backed the Communist Party’s initiative to recognise the independence of the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics.
According to the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, the international community has condemned Russia’s action, expressing support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and warned Russia of a “swift and firm response.”
