Tbilisi: The Minister of Internal Affairs Vakhtang Gomelauri, together with Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili, attended the civil funeral of Otar Ghvinashvili, a policeman killed in the line of duty in the Sagareji shooting tragedy. Irakli Gharibashvili and Vakhtang Gomelauri expressed their condolences to the family, relatives, colleagues and friends of the deceased policeman.
Along with them, The Georgian Minister of Justice – Rati Bregadze, Defense Minister – Juansher Burchuladze and Adjara Government Chairman – Tornike Rizhvadze also attended the civil funeral of the police officer and consoled the grief-struck family members and relatives of Ghvinashvili.
The Georgian officials paid their last tributes and respects for his selfless service to the nation, while bowing their heads to regard his sacrifice. The police officers, the employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the representatives of various agencies were also present at the funeral.
On the night of January 20, civil tributes for the police officer, Senior Detective – Otar Ghvinashvili, who was killed in the attack in Sagarejo, were held in Tbilisi, St. Vakhtang Gorgasli Cathedral.
The Senior Detective of the Kakheti Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Senior Lieutenant of Police – Otar Ghvinashvili will be buried tomorrow, January 24, in his native village – Little Chailuri, with all due respects and military honour.
Notably, the Sagarejo shooting tragedy had claimed the lives of five individuals as the 49-year-old ex-serviceman of the Georgian Armed Forces went on a killing spree, with the motives yet to be known.
The Senior Lieutenant Otar Ghvinashvili in Sagarejo, on a call, received from the yard of one of the multi-storey apartment buildings with a colleague. The attacker opened fire on the police from one of the apartments. As a result of the wounds sustained, Ghvinashvili lost his life.
