The Head of the National Forestry Agency, Besik Amiranashvili, got acquainted with the ongoing forest restoration project in the Kvemo Kartli region. The works are being carried out in the Gardabani-Marneuli forest district, in the Chali forest massif, and cover an area of 65 hectares.
The National Forestry Agency shared the glimpses of the restoration works carried out in the Kvemo Kartli region on its official Facebook page on April 20, 2026, Monday. The Agency also shared some information related to the works along with its glimpses.
For the implementation of the project, forestry specialists selected the territory based on a preliminary, detailed survey and special study. The mentioned forest massif has been significantly damaged over the years due to intensive movement and grazing of domestic animals, creating a threat of degradation, which significantly hinders the natural renewal process. Also, as a result of unsystematic logging in the past, a large part of the valuable timber species characteristic of the ecosystem, including Chali oak and elm, were destroyed.
As part of the project, a full-scale cleaning and fencing of the territory was carried out last year, after which 25,000 seedlings of 11 species were planted.
“The forestry reform, which is being implemented by the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture, includes two main components – forest protection and improvement of forest management practices. All our measures are focused on these goals. The restoration of floodplain forests from an ecological point of view ensures the creation of ecosystem services. In addition, a forest that is as close to natural as possible is distinguished by its high conservation value and significantly contributes to the development of biodiversity,” said Besik Amiranashvili, Head of the National Forestry Agency.
At the initiative of the National Forestry Agency, this year, 25,000 additional saplings of the Red List protected species – floodplain oak will be planted within the framework of the project.
