The Georgian people in the United States of America have commemorated the 100th anniversary of 1924’s anti-Soviet struggle. On September 27, an event was held at the Victims of Communism Memorial Museum in Washington, DC.

Although citizens observe every year day but his year has special significance. This year a total of one hundred years has been completed for the series of events that happened in 1924 against the soviet misrule.

It is worth noting that this year’s event in the USA was observed by the Georgian Association in the USA. The special event also had support from the Soviet Past Research Laboratory (Sovlab) and Harvard University’s Georgia Studies Program.

The attendees were addressed by several key speakers. Some of them include “Sovlab” members Irakli Khvadagiani and Giorgi Kandelaki. The professor of Harvard University Stephen Jones also addressed the event along with the head of the Memory Research Center of Ilia State University. The discussion held about the development that has happened in the past 100 years and the challenges being faced by Georgia.

Giorgi Kandelaki the project manager of Sovlab stated specifically that “For a number of years the Russian forces and its allies have been cultivating an anti-Western agenda in our beloved Georgia. This is totally unacceptable for Georgia which is aspiring to join the European Union and has already gained the status of a candidate country.”

He also talked about the project Irakli Khvadagiani. Specifically he underlined that “In any country when people forget past, they also become vulnerable to more unfavourable situations in the future. We cannot risk forgetting the past that our ancestors have created with their greater scarify.”

At the same time an exhibition was also hosted which displayed memories. On this occasion the 12 members of the first democratically elected Parliament were honoured for their contribution to democracy development in the country.

At the end of the event tribute was paid to the victims of the Sokhumi conflict as well as people who lost lives in the war in Ukraine. They also take a pledge to make every effort to protect Georgian democracy.
