Kutaisi: Levan Ioseliani, the public defender of Georgia visited Kutaisi Psychiatric clinic of mental health and drug prevention centre on Tuesday. He was accompanied by Deputy Ombudsman Irine Chikhladze to get information about the living conditions of patients there.
As per information shared by Georgian Public Defender office the visit was aimed to ensure good environment at centre which will be beneficial for all patients. Moreover, a good and comfortable living condition at these centres will also contribute for overall welfare of patients and encouraged them to be part of mainstream.
It is worth to note that at the time of visit, they both have inspected the physical environment of the clinic, patient living rooms, dining area, wet spots, courtyard, talked to patients as well as representatives of the institution administration and staff. They also asked them question about services which are being provided to them there.
At the same time special attention was given to the overcrowding of the facility, the heavy infrastructure and sanitary conditions. The official of centre shed light on the lack of resources allocated for the efficient management of the facility and timely provision of the needs as well as the low remuneration of support staff.
The current condition of the psychiatric institutions presents a special challenge; therefore, the Public Ombudsman continues to supervise the protection of the rights of people in psychiatric hospitals in the future and will present relevant recommendations in Parliament and Special Reports.
The centre official demanded immediate attention for their problems also. They also raised concerns to upgrade overall infrastructure to tackle present day challenges for its effective functioning as well.
They both visited all and each section of this centre and receive information about the facilities being provided as well. It is worth to note that public defender of Georgia along with other officials used to visit different centre to review the standard of facilities there as well. Public Defender after visit said, they will continue to visit these centres in future.
