Berlin: Salome Zurabishvili, the President of Georgia, met her German counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier. They met in the German capital on September 30.

President reached there after her visit to another European country, France. President had a meeting with the Georgian diaspora before meeting with Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

A representative of the Georgian President’s office released an official statement. According to the statement, “At this bilateral meeting, the president raised Russia’s influence on the election in Georgia. Moreover, she also highlighted the problems that are being created for the Georgian diaspora to prevent them from participating in Parliament’s election.

As per the statement, the Georgian Dream-led ruling regime is creating trouble for Non-Government Organisations as they are monitoring the election process to ensure transparency. She also explained to the German President that every citizen of Georgia supports Georgia’s EU integration.

On the other hand, Frank-Walter Steinmeier lauded the Georgian charter. This document was initiated by the President of Georgia to speed up the European Integration process.

He further added, “I wish pro-European forces win the elections in Georgia. Germany is there to support the Georgian people and their fight for democracy.”

During the meeting with Salome Zurabishvili, Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed gratitude for her clear pro-European attitude. However, he criticised the setback the Georgian administration received in the EU accession process.

Meanwhile, Germany’s Ambassador to Georgia has also commented on the meeting’s developments. In his tweet, Ambassador Peter Fischer stated, “It is sad to see how the Georgian regime is endangering historic opportunity towards EU integration.”

Notably, Georgia is going to organise an election for Parliament. The opposition parties hope to win the trust of people who are angry against Georgian Dream, the ruling party of Georgia. The people were angry because of the adoption of the controversial law “foreien agents law” often labelled as Russian law by the opposition.

On the other hand the ruling party also blames the opposition parties for their anti-national agenda. The ruling GD party defends the foreign agent as necessary to bring transparency in foreign funding.
