The prominent rights watchdog of Georgia, Georgian Young Lawyer Association has decided to file petition for release of detained journalist Mzia Amaghlobeli. She has been booked under criminal charge after release from detention made on administrative ground.
As per the information received from sources the legal team of the GYLA will demand through petition the release Amaghlobeli from pre-trial detention.
The legal team which will have members from GYLA as well as from BLB law firm is all set to file petition in court of law. As per legal teams all charges against the Batumelebi/Netgazeti director Mzia Amaghlobelia are unbounded and baseless so she should be released from the custody as soon as possible.
Moreover, they also alleged that she has not committed any wrong and she is being punishes just for political affiliations. The detained journalist is on a continue hunger strike and become very week.
Initially she was arrested on January 13 on administrative charges. However, she was released but surprisingly again booked by authorities on criminal charges as well.
She was booked under article 353 of the Georgian Criminal Code. The article related to attack on law enforcement officers as she was also booked for same offence.
It is also worth to note that legal team of GYLA said that court have not take care of the real facts and made the false case just to arret as she was part of anti-social protests in country.
The large-scale protest erupted in country when Georgia Dream led government decided to postpone the talks of European Union accession till 2028. On the other hand, police and other law enforcement agencies have launched crackdown against the members of media houses and other members of public.
Similar protest was also there in last year against the foreign agent’s law. The protesters demanded to revoke the law. According to protestors this law has been made curb and stifle voice of independent media houses as well.
