Ianeti’s football team won the tough fought foot match. The match was held in memory of the August 2008 heroes who sacrificed their lives in the Georgia-Russian conflicts.
It is to be added that 11 teams took part in the commemoration tournament of the Samtredia heroes of the August War. The hero were Lasha Tevzadze, Marlen Baramia, Levan Melkadze, and Avedik Lomidze.
The match was organised by the Municipality Hall. The initiative was taken to make people aware of the contribution of the people who lost their lives in the Russia-Georgian conflict. A large number of people were also displaced during the conflict.
The football matches were held for four days on the newly rehabilitated football field at the base of the Eros Manjgaladze sports complex in Samtredia. The final match was held on August 8 between the teams that reached the final by defeating others as well. It is worth mentioning that the Ianeti team won the final match with a score of 3:1.
The winner of the tournament was presented with a trophy and a monetary award established by the municipality’s Mayor’s office by Davit Bakhtadze, the mayor of Samtredia municipality. Prizes were awarded to local teams which were also to show appreciation for their participation in the tournament. Representatives of local self-government attended the closing of the tournament.
Davit Bakhtadze while addressing the media added “The events of August are one of the tragic pages in Georgia’s recent history and, at the same time an unparalleled example of the heroism spirit displayed by our country’s heroes.”
In addition he said that in this war Samtredia lost four fighters and to immortalize their souls we held a football tournament. This tournament also serves the purpose of developing sports and a healthy lifestyle in the municipality. I congratulate Ianeti ‘s team on the victory and thank the participating teams for their active participation.
There are country-wide events and seminars, webinars etc. being held across many parts of the country. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and many other higher officials of the government have paid tributes to the people who lost their lives in conflicts as well.
