The construction of the Kvesheti-Kobi highway also known as the North-South corridor is in full swing. The total length of the highway is 23 kilometer.
The road will include an asphalt-concrete road with a lighting system. Under this project 5 bridges and 5 tunnels will be constructed and 1 bridge will be rehabilitated. The project also includes the construction of a new 5 km road to Gudauri.
According to the latest information the cutting of the 9 km-long main tunnel connecting Tskere to the village of Kob and its parallel 9 km-long evacuation tunnel has been completed.
Speaking about the project’s progress the Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure, Irakli Karseladze stated “This year we have completed the 9 km main and evacuation tunnel 9 km, 6 meters diameter tunnel.Intensive work is underway on engineering networks, power supply, messaging, security, and other essential systems which will improve road connectivity.”
According to the minister the driveway where a technologically unique console bridge is being built, is being built for the first time in Georgia. This will be the highest bridge with a tower height of 48 meters. Until now we had the highest 42-meter-high towers on the Khashuri bypass road. The minister recently visited the site to inspect the progress of ongoing work.
It is worth noting that the current engineering communications, messages, security and other systems are underway in the tunnels. The work of cutting and sculpting two tunnels 1500m and 500m long has been completed.
Works on cutting the other two tunnels and building all five bridges are intensively underway. Construction of towers on the longest 435 m bridge of the project and on the rest of the construction of towers and bridges continues at full pace.
The new road provided with all the necessary road safety standards will reduce travel time. The project will also help the industry as this will reduce the time spent transporting the raw material.
