Georgian Environment Ministry’s Delegation Visit Belgium

Under the project “Save Nature-Georgia” a high-level delegation of the Georgian Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture visited Belgium on an official visit. During the visit, the board held many meetings and number of issues relating to agriculture, especially Genetically Modified Organisms were discussed.

At the same time working meetings were held at the Belgian Federal Agency for Health, Food Safety and Environment, as well as at the Belgian Environment and Food Research, Food Safety and Brussels Environment Agencies.

At all of these meetings the parties discussed genetically modified organisms in the field of European Union regulations and biosecurity at the Global Convention. They also discussed Cartagena’s October implementation standards, challenges in practice and future visions in the field of agriculture and environmental health practices.

Attention was also paid to the obligations of Georgia regarding genetically modified organisms under the agenda of association with the European Union. During the official visit, the members of the Georgian delegation also visited the Federal Agency for Health, Food Safety and Environment, as well as the laboratories of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Research Institute and Ghent Institute of Biotechnology and got themself familiar with the modern methods of diagnosis of agriculture-related diseases.

Members of the Georgian delegation also on the occasion received important recommendations from their Belgian colleagues who shared their experiences and information on set prospects for future cooperation.

Notably project “Save Nature-Georgia” was launched by the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia and was supported by the Swedish Government’s International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). It has been successfully running since the year of 2021. The aim of this special dedicated project is to improve the sustainable management of natural resources in Georgia and to promote the protection and restoration of biodiversity, strengthen the institutional capabilities of the Ministry and its departments for which a number of important actions are required.

The project “Save Nature Georgia” aimed to protect the climate change vulnerable areas of the country. Many environmental protection and agriculture-related initiatives have been started under this important project. In the direction to protect the flora and fauna of the country many areas have already been declared as protected areas. The protected areas will have special provisions under the Georgiann Environment laws.

The Growing threat of climate change and the rising earth’s temperature has forced Governments across the globe to think diligently in this matter. The governments are under huge pressure to Mitigate the ill effects of climate change and rising temperatures on their respective countries.

At the same time many international organisations have come into existence to make collective efforts to make the practice of the agricultural environment friendly and less harmful to the atmosphere.

Recently, the COP28(Conference of Parties) Conference was held in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. This COP28 conference is a global private to reduce the side effects of climate change.
