Samtredia Municipality remembers victims of April 1989

The Samtredia municipality of Georgia has remembered the victim of the April 9, 1989 tragedy. On this day thirty-five years ago 21 people lost their lives during a peaceful anti-soviet demonstration. The day is marked as the day of national unity.

It is to be added that protestors were holding a rally in front of the Parliament building when Soviet Army used tanks and poison gas to suppress the anti-soviet, pro-independence demonstration in the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi. . They were informed about the action of the soviet union but refused to go.

The municipality administration stated “The date 9 April is a symbol of pain and great freedom of Georgians, which is precious for every Georgian. Today, we will honour the memory of those who died on April 9th”.

The municipality also took to its social media handles and stated in a Facebook post,”Today is a very important day for all of us. The Mayor of the municipality Davit Bakhtadze, Chairman of the City Council Nugzar Jamburia and representatives of local authorities and society gathered at the 9th April memorial in the morning and remembered the people who were killed on this day.”

On the other hand, a “Pupil Parliament” and theatrical circle near the Pupil-Youth House dedicated this day to hold a thematic event to remember the victim of tragedy. The 9th April memorial was also decorated with flowers and candles to remember the victim.

Mayor Davit Bakhtadze stated “Despite the passage of time the pain that reminds us of April 9 does not slow down. It was an example of unity and love of the country. Hats off to those who gave their lives for the country’s prosperity. Exactly after two years this date became the Day of Restoration of Georgia’s Independence. We still have a lot to do to fully fulfil the hopes of those who died for the homeland. Thank you for gift of freedom to us”.
