Tbilisi: One of the Prominent non-governmental organisation of Georgia “media advocacy coalition” once again attacked law enforcement agencies.
The NGO claimed that large number of protesters were detailed illegally by law enforcer which violates procedure of arrest.
The NGO’s representative also underlined that,” Police and other law enforcement agencies used excessive force against peaceful demonstrators in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi and detailed them illegally”
It is also to be added that in a large-scale and apparently punitive operations, law enforcement officers harassed, aggressively detained and beat protesters. Police tortured and ill-treated detainees both in police cars and at police stations.
However, the human rights watch interviewed to protect twelve victims of police violence who suffered a variety of injuries, including concussions, multiple fractures to the face, nose, ribs and limbs, as well as scratches and bruises all over their bodies.
It is also to be noted that the violent officers were wearing riot police uniforms and they wore black masks without identification marks. The authorities charged hundreds of protesters with administrative charges for resisting police and tried them in summary trials but took no effective steps to investigate serious allegations of torture and ill-treatment.
The human rights organisation also said that the members of special forces and violent groups allegedly affiliated with the government attacked opposition and independent media journalists and interfered with their professional activities.
Hugh Williamson who is director of Europe and central Asia of human rights watch underlined in his comments on police action “The scale of the force used by the authorities against peaceful protesters is disturbing, clearly retaliatory and violates both Georgian law and international standards.”
He also stated that, “The scale of police mistreatment of protesters and the Georgian government’s failure to punish perpetrators suggests that violence is being condoned by the government.”
Notably the capital city Tbilisi is facing heat of wide scale protest since ruling party Georgian Dream suspend talks for integration into European Union till 2028. The protesters alleging that decision was taken under influence of Russia.
