Nino Thandilashvili, the first deputy Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia visited the Aerological observation station at Poti. The Minister familiarized herself with the work process of station.
Nino Thandilashvili was accompanied by Vasil Gedevanishvili, head of the National Environment Agency, Deputy Permanent Representative of the United Nations Development Program in Georgia Nils Christensen and Majority MP of Poti Giorgi Khakhubia.
It is to be noted that the aerological observation station was installed in Poti at upper layers of the atmosphere. The station located at 30-35 km above the earth’s surface, measures meteorological parameters such as wind speed and direction, air temperature and humidity which are necessary for the most accurate forecast of weather and natural events.
These observations are also important for climate analysis, agricultural production, water resources management, aviation, early warning of multifaceted threats and more. This station is integrated with the agency’s observation systems and with the modern information-telecommunications and forecasting (ICT) system which is being implemented at this stage.
During her visit the Minister said “In Poti we opened another regional office of the National Environment Agency and the first aerological station with modern standards. Its construction will allow us to further improve the weather forecast throughout the country.
She added “In the coming years, we will continue to strengthen the capabilities of the Poti regional office so that our country has a modern weather forecasting system, which is important both for the safety of our population and for the development of various economic sectors.”
Poti Majority MP Giorgi Khakhubia on this occasion congratulated the employees of the National Environment Agency on the opening of the aerological observation station and emphasized the importance of the first aerological station in the South Caucasus region for accurate and quick weather forecasting.
Giorgi Guguchia the State Commissioner of the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region along with representatives of the National Environment Agency, attended the opening event of the aerological observation station. Poti’s Mayor Beka Vacharadze and local self-government representatives were also present.
