For the fifth day in a row, the Public Ombudsman and his trustees have met with people who have been arrested or injured; the majority of them have pointed to the police’s harsh treatment.
Serious injuries, in most cases, have suffered to the face, eye, and head, which practically excludes the probability that the police used necessary proportional force on them at all times. The location, character, and quality of the injuries give a credible impression that police use violent methods against citizens to punish them. Intentional, severe violence for punishment is an act of torture. These actions shows the Police cruelty in Georgia.
This time, it is wanted to provide society with additional information about the people who are engaged in demonstrations. At this time, the device has visited a total of 201 people, including a 21-year-old boy at Ingorokva University Hospital, whose serious health condition is actively circulating in the media.
Following the data disseminated in the previous days, the trustees visited Tbilisi, Baghdati, Gori, and Zestafoni temporary detention isolators, as well as clinics on December 1-3, of which 56 people pointed out the inappropriate treatment by the members of the special purpose squad (21 of them did not want to react). 44 of the detainees were noted with various types of injuries.
Unfortunately, the information provided regarding the circumstances of arrest is not different from the practice recorded in the previous days. It is noted that in recent days, several detainees pointed out facts of confiscation of personal belongings after arrest.
Information gathered from the public and shared by the media is continuously provided by the Public Defender’s Special Investigation Service to support additional legal action. Additionally, the apparatus will respond appropriately to the residents who have been arrested for stealing clothing and personal items.
At this time, the Georgian Public Ombudsman is still on the road, and they will give the public more details.
The Public Ombudsman calls on the Minister of Internal Affairs – to publicly condemn each fact of violence by the police and to ensure that effective measures are taken to prevent any illegal actions by the police.
