Tbilisi, Georgia: A teaching seminar for farmers and other specialists was recently held by the Scientific Research Center of Agriculture (SRCA) on ‘Threat of the Tropilaelaps mite’ in the village of Mukhuri, Chkhorotsku Municipality. During the seminar, they discussed the risks associated with the potential threat of the spread of the Tropilaelaps mite (Tropilaelaps spp.) in apiaries.
It must be emphasized that this parasite is unique due to its high reproduction capability, destruction of bee larvae and brood, and hindrance of healing processes.
As an expert, Irakli Janashia, who is an Associate Professor from the Agrarian University in Biology, Doctor of Biology, also attended the training where he educated participants on the latest scientific and practical approaches for controlling the mite that is a major concern for beekeepers and the center’s specialists.
In his case, I emphasized with participants some of the practical and scientific approaches on how to deal with the mite, which is literally a big problem for the beekeepers and the Center specialists.
The Georgian Scientific Research Center of Agriculture (SRCA) shared details and glimpses of the training workshop on its official Facebook account on 11 April, 2025.
For the seminar Tropilaelaps biological features and its possible geographical expansion in Georgia were discussed as well as the differentiation of the illness from Varroa (Varroa destructor) and the recommended criteria for control and observation were set.
At the Mukhuri Beekeeping Breeding Base, the Center actively cultivates the local forms of the bees and their hybrids. In this regard, the Center preserves traditional local beekeeping and contributes to the conservation of genetically sustainable populations. Such seminars play an important role in the furthering of cooperation at the regional level through the use of knowledge.
