Georgia: Scientific and Research Center of Agriculture (SRCA) of Georgia is preparing a documentary on the protection of genetic resources of plants with the support of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The documentary will show the process of protection of agro-biodiversity, research and conservation of plant genetic resources in the country.
The Scientific and Research Center of Agriculture shared a report with details and images on its official Facebook account. The snippets provided showed behind the scenes of the documentary.
As per reports, shooting for the documentary has already been completed at the bases of Tsilkani and Jighaura of SRCA. Also, shooting in the Seed Laboratory of the Center and Genbank is also over.
Moreover, SRCA also finished shooting on the plots of farmers in Kakheti and Samtskhe-Javakheti municipalities. These areas of Georgia are conserving the traditional varieties.
Furthermore, Cindy Cote-Andretti, technical officer of the International Treaty for Plant Genetic Resources (ITPGRFA) and National Geographic representative Thomas Nicholson visited the  Scientific and Research Center as part of working in the documentary.Â
Also, Levan Ujmajuridze and Genbank manager Tamar Jinjikhadze were interviewed for the documentary. According to SRCA, they will present the documentary at the meeting of the governing body of the United Nations International Treaty for Plant Genetic Resources (ITPGRFA). It will take place in Lima, Peru in November 2025.
Goal of the Documentary by SRCA
This film is part of an international project titled “Preservation of traditional varieties adapted to climate change in farms and strengthening in situ/on farm and ex-sit connection.
The goal of this documentary is to bring global attention to Georgia’s agro-biodiversity. It will also showcase the role of local genetic resources in the development of sustainable agriculture. This initiative is in response to climate change.
Notably, the audience will see unique footage that shows Georgia’s participation in one of the most symbolic platforms for the protection of international genetic resources in the film. They will get to see the process of placing Georgian samples in the Svalbard seed storage and its importance.
The Director of SRCA reports that this documentary is a very important platform. Georgia will put forth its efforts in the protection and popularization of genetic resources. They will showcase this to a global audience via this documentary.
