Georgia: Tengiz Nasaridze, the Georgian Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture, spoke at the “Reduction of food loss and waste” conference in Budapest.

In Budapest, the capital of Hungary, a conference on food waste and sustainable development of food systems was organized under the aegis of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture, and FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations). Hungarian Minister of Agriculture Ishtvan Nagi opened the conference.

At the panel discussion held at the conference, Tengiz Nasaridze noted that in 2023, Georgia adopted a law on “reduction of food loss and its waste and donation of food.” Georgia became the first country in the region to adopt the law, which laid the foundation for the formation of a new system.

The law’s purpose is to take measures to prevent and reduce food loss and waste at each stage of the food supply chain and to encourage food recovery and further distribution.

“Today’s conference and the meetings held within the conference provide an important platform for sharing international experiences, including for Georgia, which is taking its first steps in this direction.” Comprehensive work is underway with FAO, which, on the one hand, will ensure that food loss and waste will be reduced in the country and, on the other hand, will make safe, surplus food more accessible to the population,” said Tengiz Nasaridze.

The conference “Reduction of Food Loss and Waste” was attended by the first persons of the Ministry of Agriculture in ten countries. Hungary, Czech Republic and Cyprus participated in the panel discussion of the ministerial held within the framework of the conference.

Tamar Liluashvili attended the events along with the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia and the Ambassador of Emergency and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to Hungary.
