Trinidad and Tobago: In a landmark shift in politics, the Congress of the People (COP) has officially joined forces with the United National Congress (UNC) and several other political organisations to create what they collectively call is a “Unstoppable, winning Coalition of Interests.” The alliance which comes just a few weeks prior to the general elections aims to remove the ruling PNM from the parliament and confirm as much seats as possible.
The Coalition includes several different parties including the UNC, the Progressive Empowerment Party (PEP), the Oilfields Workers Trade Union (OWTU), the Public Services Association (PSA), and the LOVE party. The announcement of this political shift was made by the parties through a joint media release in which the authorities outlined that their collaboration focuses on rescuing Trinidad and Tobago from the Decade of Destruction under the PNM.
As outlined by the political parties, the COP is committed to contest among two of the most critical parliamentary seats, the St Ann’s East and Port of Spain-south. Notably, the PNM has a strong hold over these seats, and the collaboration between the political parties see this as a major opportunity to expand their reach into such areas that are neglected by the PNM.
Which key areas UNC and COP aim to tackle upon victory
The alliance between the political parties aim to address the urgent need of tackling the rising crime, economic stability, high food prices and growing rate of unemployment.
“We need all hands-on deck to rebuild Trinidad and Tobago, fix our broken systems, and restore our nation to its rightful place as a peaceful, harmonious, vibrant, and prosperous centre of the Caribbean, the hemisphere, and the world,” the media release read further.
UNC and COP express confidence in bringing change in T&T
As the general elections are approaching fast, the political parties are notably making big announcements and promises, while outlining the failures of the ruling PNM party. The UNC along with COP have expressed their confidence that their alliance will bring the much-needed change into the country.
“The time for change is now. The Coalition is ready. Trinidad and Tobago are ready to win,” the statement concluded.
