Ilia Darachiashvili, the Finance Minister of Georgia has condemned the United States of America’s decision to cancel invitation for Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze to reception.
The PM was initially invited to a reception being hosted by USA President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
According to Georgian Minister Darachiashvili this is a very unfortunate decision. Moreover it is an insult to not just of our Prime Minister but of the entire country and this is extremely regrettable.
FM Darachiashvili, speaking on the development stated “It is sad to see an invitation is cancelled for a reception at later stage. However Georgia is always ready to maintain good, friendly relations with all countries of the Caucasus region and the rest of the world. Our government is always open to dialogue to discuss every issue including bilateral ties with the United States of America.”
He further underlined that Georgia always supports the need for mutual dialogue, partnership and friendship for a peaceful world. There may be many occasions when countries have differences of opinion but even then there is no alternative to dialogue and exchange of views.
The FM expressed hopes that those who have made this decision will reconsider it, which will improve the relationship for future cooperation. Notably the Georgian administration revealed about this invitation earlier this week.
As per administration Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze is all set to join world leaders at the reception which will be hosted by the US President and his wife for the heads of countries who are in New York to attend the UN General Assembly’s 79th session.
On the other hand high-ranking officials from the USA said that the decision had been taken due to Georgia’s recent anti-democratic actions. Moreover the leader of the ruling regime of the Georgian Dream has also made multiple statements disrespecting democratic and Georgian values.
It is worth noting that the USA was very critical of Georgia’s foreign agent law, which was adopted despite being vetoed by the President. The USA expressed concern about independent media’s voices which may be stifled under foreign agent law.
