Tbilisi: The Georgian Interior Ministry has brought forth a draft bill that proposed an increase in speeding penalties in a bid to prevent the violation of traffic rules. As per the sources, the proposed amendments will be submitted in Parliament to carry out discussions in the upcoming weeks.
As per the latest amendments, vehicles exceeding the speed limit above 40km/h , would have to pay a penalty of ₾300 ($104) . This is double the earlier speeding penalty of ₾150 ($52).
Additionally, the bill stated that any speeding incident that resulted in an emergency situation would call for ₾400 ($139) , which earlier stood at ₾300 ($104).
Meanwhile, if any vehicle, cargo, road or other infrastructure as well as property or an individual is slightly damaged due to speeding, the culprit shall be penalised with ₾600 ($208) instead of ₾500 ($173).
Further, speeding by a person carrying out regular passenger transportation , regular long-distance transportation or international regular passenger transportation, as established by the international agreements, would be penalised with ₾400 ($139) from the earlier penalty of ₾300 ($104).
Drifting a car, except for a sports event, will be fined ₾300 ($104). If it further causes damage to a vehicle, cargo, road or other infrastructure, the fine would be increased to ₾500 ( $173).
The toll of road accidents in Georgia reached 2572 between January to June. While 221 have been killed, more than 3500 people have been injured in the mishaps on the road as per the official statistics of the Interior Ministry.
