The police action against the protestor in Georgia are being criticized at the international level. The protestors are opposing the “foreign agent ” law.
The protests are being held outside the Georgian Parliament. As per the proposed law the if any media house or the non-commercial organization receives more than 20% of funding from any foreign country then it will be registered as the institute under foreign influence. As per the latest reports 63 people have been arrested by the law enforcement agencies on Tuesday night. Proster alleged the attack on the journalists by the police forces which is seen as a serious issue.
The protector used the term “Russian law” for this proposed law according to protestors Russia also used this kind of law to suppress the voices who were critical of the Kremlin regime in the past year. Protester fears that if this law gets passed and implemented in Georgia the freedom of media and the non-commercial organization will come under the direct control of the state authorities.
Notably last year this bill was withdrawn under huge public pressure, however the government seems to be adamant this year to get through with the passage of this law. Meanwhile the latest police action attracted international criticism.
The very strong reaction came from Joseph Borrell, who is the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission.
He said “I condemn the police action strongly. The people of Georgia have the legal right to hold a peaceful protest. Moreover, Georgia is the candidate country of the European Union and protection of the legal, democratic rights of the people must be a priority of the government.”
Similarly Peter Fischer the German Ambassador to Georgia took strong exception to the recent development of the police action and stated that “This violence must be stopped immediately. Violence cannot solve any issue rather it will complicate the situation.”
