The Georgian Court of Appeals fully satisfied the prosecutor’s appeal and replaced the pretrial detention imposed on the former chairman of the Chokhatauri City Council with imprisonment.
According to the Court of Appeals, the risk of obstructing justice and influencing the investigation justified the use of a stricter preventive measure, leading to the decision to remand the accused in custody.
The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia shared the glimpses of the arrest made by them on its official Facebook Page on February 4, 2026, Wednesday. The Georgian Prosecution Service also shared a small note about the crime, along with glimpses of the arrest made by them.
The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia appealed the decision of the Ozurgeti District Court, which granted bail as a preventive measure to the accused in the case of group violence, the former chairman of the Chokhatauri Municipality City Council, on appeal, based on which the accused was sentenced to imprisonment as a preventive measure.
Law enforcement officers arrested the accused in connection with a confrontation that occurred in one of the Ozurgeti restaurants. He was charged under Article 126, Part 1, Subparagraph “b” (violence committed in a group) of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which provides for up to 2 years of imprisonment as a form and measure of punishment.
The prosecutor’s office requested that the accused be sentenced to imprisonment as a preventive measure, which the court did not agree with and imposed a 30,000 GEL bail on the accused as a preventive measure. The prosecutor’s office appealed this decision to the Court of Appeal, requesting that the accused be sentenced to imprisonment as a preventive measure.
