Georgian PM, Hungarian FM discusses European Council’ decision on granting Georgia the prospect of EU membership

The decision of the European Council on granting Georgia the prospect of EU membership and the close partnership between the two countries were the main topics of discussion between the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, Peter Siarto.

The decision of the European Council on granting Georgia the prospect of EU membership and the close partnership between the two countries were the main topics of discussion between the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, Peter Siarto.

Irakli Garibashvili thanked Peter Siarto for his clear support for granting Georgia the status of EU candidate and noted that he was grateful to the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, for taking a principled position.

The head of the government noted that the opinion of the European Commission on Georgia’s European perspective was officially recognized, which was reaffirmed by the European Council on the recommendation of the European Commission.

According to the Prime Minister, the Georgian government continues to work on all the reforms included in the Association Agenda and will complete all the commitments made in the direction of democratic reforms.

Irakli Garibashvili thanked Peter Siarto for supporting Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. For his part, the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade reaffirmed his unwavering support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as for the European and Euro-Atlantic integration process.

The meeting highlighted the successful partnership between Georgia and Hungary in many areas and expressed readiness to further deepen this partnership.

The meeting was attended by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Hungary to Georgia Anna Maria Shiko, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Ilia Darchiashvili, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to Hungary Zaal Gogsadze and the Head of the Government Revaz Javelidze.
