A U.S. government agency, Helsinki Commission, monitoring the current scenario and security in Europe, has called on U.S. President Joe Biden to designate Ukraine and Georgia as Major Non-NATO Allies (MNNAs).

Helsinki Commission is a U.S. government agency that promotes human rights, military security, and economic cooperation in 57 countries in Europe, Eurasia, & North America.

Moreover, in a letter to Biden, the government agency asked the president’s administration to strengthen the U.S. support for Ukraine and Georgia, portraying the Russian occupation of the countries “the tragedy of long-stalled Euro-Atlantic enlargement.”

They wrote, “Without strong and proactive United States’ support for Ukrainian and Georgian NATO membership, Russian President Vladimir Putin will continue to take plentiful advantage in his aspirations to upend security and cooperation in Europe and his neocolonial agenda.”

Furthermore, the Commission has also recommended considering the MNNA status for Sweden, Moldova and Finland.

The United States defines the MNNA status as providing its foreign partners with benefits in defence and security cooperation.

The U.S. Helsinki Commission, aka The Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, is an independent U.S. government agency created by Congress in 1975 to monitor and encourage compliance with the Helsinki Final Act and other Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe commitments.

Last Tuesday, the Chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, Senator Ben Cardin, as well as Co-Chairman Congressman Steve Cohen, Commission ranking members Sen. Roger F. Wicker and Congressman Joe Wilson, praised the Georgian government’s “strong” support for Ukraine.

The U.S. Helsinki Commission’s statement also mentions the Baltic Sea states and Poland, Romania, Turkey, and Moldova’s efforts in reaction to Russian aggression.
