The police action against protestors in Georgia once again took centre stage in media. A watchdog namely “Rule of Law” have asked Special Investigation Service (SIS) as well as to office of Prosecutor to investigate incident of police action against a protester Anatoli Gigauri.
The watchdog in its statement added that the violence against own citizens by the police and other law enforcement authorities of Georgia is serious issue and may cause danger of democracy of Georgia in future.
While disclosing details of incident, watchdog revealed that Anatoli Gigauri was attacked by police force member on November 24 near Parliament building in capital city Tbilisi. Moreover, he was charged with the offence of attacking a police officer on duty.
The watchdog further made public details on three specific incidents of alleged violence against Anatoli Gigauri when being arrested as well. The police force used abusive language against him and also gave hand punch to cause physical harm.
Anatoli Gigauri was stopped by police officer when he was driving car with two others. His face began bleeding due to assault by police force. Anatoli Gigauri himself blamed that the police officer beaten him when he was taken to main division office of Ministry of internal affairs of Georgia.
The inspector of patrolling party also assaulted him in presence of another police officer.There was a huge criticism against this brutal action of police.
The member of watchdog while calling for further action asked all relevant agencies to gather evidence which will prove police action was wrong. The representatives of watchdog further added that, we call for equal treatment to all under Georgian law.
This incident must be investigated with same seriousness as incident of citizens attack on officer is investigated.He was charged under article 353 of criminal code of Georgia. This section covers offence of “assault on police officers or other representatives of the authorities or on a public institution.”
