Russia-Ukraine War: The threats by Russian President Vladimir Putin about using nuclear weapons in Ukraine need to be taken seriously, the bloc’s foreign policy chief stated. Josep Borrell stated that the war had reached a ‘dangerous moment’.Â
The remarks came as Russia announced partial mobilisation and is currently moving ahead towards annexure of four regions of Ukraine.
The Russian President has recently faced setbacks in the Ukrainian battlefield as the Russian army has been pushed into a corner due to the counter-offensives pressed by the Ukrainian forces.
“Certainly, it’s a dangerous moment because the Russian army has been pushed into a corner, and Putin’s reaction – threatening using nuclear arms – it’s very bad,” Mr Borrell said. Â
It’s already been seven months since Russia invaded Ukraine. Even the analysts now believe that Russian forces are being forced to get on the back foot. However, a diplomatic solution has to be sought out for the situation that preserves the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine; stated Borrell further adding, Otherwise, we can finish the war, but we will not have peace, and we will have another war.”
Earlier this week, President Putin addressed the country, saying that his country had ‘various weapons of destruction and would be using them if needed, stressing, “I’m not bluffing’.
This has added to the worries of the body as “When people say it is not a bluff, you have to take them seriously,” Mr Borrell stated.
Also, in the same address, Putin had called up 300000 Russians who have provided compulsory military service, sparking protests and reports of the nationals fleeing the Russian territory to avoid being sent to the war front line.
