Georgia, March 18, 2024: International Waste Recycling Day also known as global recycling day is observed on 18 March every year. It aims to raise awareness of the need to implement modern waste management standards.

It is a day to promote recycling and conservation by educating people about the status of essential resources. The first celebration of Global Recycling Day was not implemented until a few years later, though, in 2018. The date, March 18, was set to coincide with the 70th birthday of the Bureau of International Recycling.

The Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture Solomon Pavliashvili said in a meeting, “In recent years, Georgia has undergone an important economic transformation, which, on the one hand, increased the benefits, and on the other hand, the risks of environmental impact related to waste production. Problems caused by waste production are specific and at the same time complex. Based on the increased awareness of society and EU environmental requirements, Georgia’s waste management sector has changed significantly in recent years.”

He added, “The Waste Management Code and 20 Normative Acts have been adopted, which are in line with EU legislation; the 15-year National Strategy for Waste Management and the 5-year National Action Plans have been adopted; there is an extended obligation of the manufacturer, which is one of the important components of the development of the circular economy.”

“Georgia strives to become a waste prevention and recycling-oriented country, which will be achieved: by carrying out waste prevention, reuse, recycling and recovery measures, imposing separation from the source of waste production, imposing expanded manufacturer obligations, establishing public-private partnership on specific waste streams, green and circular With the implantation and development of Li economy and others,” mentioned Pavliashvili.

“Modern methods of waste management are based on waste prevention and recycling, the possibilities for recycling are endless,” – Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture Solomon Pavliashvili.
