Georgia: The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, David Songulashvili, visited the Batsara-Babaneuri Protected Areas, located in Akhmeta Municipality, Kakheti Region, on May 10, 2025, Saturday. During his visit, he met with rangers to discuss conservation efforts and ongoing challenges.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia shared glimpses of the meeting on its Official Facebook Page. The Ministry also shared a short note along with the glimpses.
Covering a total area of 11,461 hectares, the Batsara-Babaneuri Protected Areas are safeguarded by 17 rangers. During the meeting, Minister Songulashvili expressed his heartfelt gratitude towards the rangers for their outstanding contribution to the protection of Georgia’s natural heritage.
David Songhulashvili spoke about the importance of a modern system of creation and management of protected areas. The minister stressed that, alongside the creation and development of protected areas, it is a priority for the state to ensure that the rangers have the right equipment, working conditions, and protection guarantees.
The protected areas of Georgia are protected by 500 rangers distributed in 25 territorial administrations. Up to 927,748 hectares of Georgia are under the protection of rangers. Their activities include collecting poaching facts, handling natural disasters and wildfire, monitoring biodiversity, and, within their competence, assisting visitors.
It is worth noting that Giorgi Abramishvili, the senior ranger of Batsara-Babaneuri protected areas, was named among the 10 best rangers in the world. He was also awarded the title of World Ranger in 2021.
The Ministry of Environment and Agriculture prioritizes the creation of protected areas. s.
