The Georgian National Competition Agency has released the latest report, which disclosed the number of violations by many companies. The Competition Agency vowed to take strict action against these companies to ensure healthy competition for economic progress.
It is to be specifically mentioned that as per the Georgia Competition and Consumer Protection Agency for Protection of Consumer Rights, from November 1, 2022, to December 31, 2023, almost 578 applications were registered, out of which 340 applications were investigated by the agency to detect any grave violation of legal provisions relating to competition law.
It is worth mentioning that during this period, by the decision of the Georgia National Competition Agency, 56 violations of the rights of the consumer group were confirmed also, with
84 cases. In 7 cases, the violation was not confirmed by the competition agency.
It is to be noted that due to failure to fulfil the obligations imposed by the agency, 11 different traders were fined an amount of 21 283 Gel in 22 cases.
Additionally So far in a total of 27 cases of confirmation of violation reported, but in 14 cases, the obligations imposed by the agency have been fully fulfilled by the merchant to avoid the fine by the agency.
However, during this specific period, the agency – for the benefit of the customer and to protect their basic rights signed 98 agreements. This means merchants have made a commitment under this provision to change their domestic policy and restore the rights of consumers who have allegedly been harmed by their trading policies.
The representative of the agency also said that From November 1, 2022, to December 2023, up to 500 000 GEL were paid for the benefit of the customer. The agency is actively monitoring the process of fulfilling the obligations taken by companies.
The Georgia National Commercial Agency has also fined four pharmaceutical companies for the violation of laws that are there for the protection of consumers’ rights. The official also said that for the full-fledged development of the economy, there should not be any kind of favouritism. They also said that strict legasl action will be taken against all the companies who will viloate the consumer rights in future as well.
