Tbilisi, Georgia: Under the leadership of the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, the first session of the Inter-Agency Commission meeting to discuss the construction of a new stadium was held in Tbilisi on January 23, 2025.
According to the discussion, the government will provide consulting services for the construction of a new stadium by a Dutch company and UEFA experts will participate in the design of the stadium concept, on which the contract will be signed in the coming days.
The meeting also discussed the issues related to sports infrastructure development in the country. It was noted that the new multifunctional stadium, which will have 70,000 fans, will provide the opportunity to host Georgia’s highest-ranking football and rugby tournaments and will attract additional investments in the mentioned sports.
In 2025, Georgia has to host the Champions League final at the new stadium and because of this, the construction of a new stadium is one of the ambitious tasks they have to complete. From an image point of view, this will also be an important event. The stadium will be designed for both football matches and rugby matches.
The news stadium can also be used as an event center, Georgia may want to host international beauty pageants or musical events like Eurovision. It will attract tourism and tourism revenues, including the sale of related product brands, sponsorship opportunities, and broadcast rights.
According to the Prime Minister, new infrastructure will be provided for the new stadium, because the current infrastructure is complex. Georgia’s capital city will have to opportunity to host high-level concerts in this new stadium. Therefore, the attraction of the country will also increase from a tourist point of view.
PM Kobakhidze also mentioned that it will be a multifunctional infrastructure and besides sports and concerts overload, it will ensure the existence of a convention center which the country does not have today, which will be able to host such high-end events. The construction of the new stadium will help attract investment in club football as well as rugby.
For the construction of a new stadium, two main locations on the outskirts of the city have been selected and the final decision on this issue will be made after consultation with the Dutch company.
The members of the Inter-agency commission meeting also talked about the planned measures to improve sports infrastructure in the regions. According to the talk, the government plans to develop sports infrastructure and build new stadiums in more than 40 regions across the country.
