Georgia: Atskuri Public School hosts meeting on Reducing risk of disasters caused by climate change

Tbilisi: Within the framework of the project "Reduce the risk of disasters caused by climate change in Georgia", a meeting was held at Atskuri Public School, which was attended by Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture Nino Tandilashvili, Director-General of the Swiss Development and Cooperation Agency Patricia Danzi and Ambassador of Switzerland to Georgia, Heidi Grau.

Tbilisi: Within the framework of the project “Reduce the risk of disasters caused by climate change in Georgia“, a meeting was held at Atskuri Public School, which was attended by Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture, Nino Tandilashvili, Director-General of the Swiss Development and Cooperation Agency, Patricia Danzi and Ambassador of Switzerland to Georgia, Heidi Grau.

 The participants of the meeting summed up the joint activities carried out by the National Environment Agency and the Swiss Development Agency. 

 “The project, which is being implemented in Georgia with the support of the Green Climate Fund, as well as the Swiss Government and the Swiss Development Agency, helps our country to develop early warning systems to create a modern weather forecasting system that will protect us from upcoming natural processes,” said the Minister of Environment and Agriculture Ilem, by Nino Tandilashvili.

“The climate change adaptation project that we are financing is very interesting and important for us, because our countries are mountainous and, therefore, there are some risks from climate change; that is why the implementation of this project and the results are very important to share the experience”, said the Swiss Government Advisory Council President Felix Gutzwiller.

 The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure Mzia Giorgobiani and Deputy Permanent Representative of the UN Development Program Anna Chernishova.

According to Anna Chernishova, Deputy Representative of the United Nations Development Program, climate change is a global problem and Georgia is no exception.

“We are glad that the project has helped Atskuri Public School, located very close to the river, which was at risk of flooding.” Within the scope of the project, the school has arranged a shoreline, which will minimize the existing risk, – Anna Chernishova said. 

 A young climate ambassador from a local school gave a presentation on the disasters caused by climate change, talked about his participation in the project and his experiences as a climate ambassador.

 Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture, Nino Tandilashvili, along with delegation members, inspected the embankment on the Upper Khodashni River, which was built within the framework of this program with the support of the Government of Georgia.

 The program “Reducing the risk of disasters caused by climate change in Georgia” is funded by the Government of Georgia, the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the governments of Switzerland and Sweden, and its implementation is ensured by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
